Triathlon as a way of life
“I was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz 43 years ago.
Since I can remember, I have practiced all kinds of sports such as Basque pelota, swimming, judo, climbing and mountaineering, but it was not until 1992 that I started to practice duathlon. One year later I competed in the Basque duathlon and triathlon circuit and two years later, in the junior category, I managed to win the Spanish Olympic distance triathlon championship and was able to participate in some World Cup events (10th place in Gerardmer). That is when I decided to dedicate myself professionally to triathlon.
In the year 2000 I fulfilled my great dream, to be an Olympic athlete and participate in the Olympic Games of Sydney 2000. I repeated the experience four years later in the Olympic Games of Athens after having achieved a place by being runner-up in Europe in Valencia.
After Athens, in 2005, I decided to make the leap to a discipline as exciting as it is hard, the Ironman. Despite suffering in my first tests, over the years this speciality has given me great results”.
Throughout his career, Eneko has won one long-distance triathlon World Championship and three Xtrerra Triathlon World Championships. He was 23rd at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and 20th at Athens 2004.
He is considered the best Spanish triathlete at the Ironman in Kona, Hawaii. He has been participating since 2006.
